The “Ghost Army” patch, associated with the 23rd Headquarters Special Troops during World War II, features a distinctive design that symbolizes the unit’s unique mission of deception and psychological warfare.
Comprised of engineers, writers, artists, and professions across the country, this 1,100 man unit was given a specific tactical mission: to deceive Hitler’s forces and mislead them as to the size and location of Allied forces.
The 23rd was known for its innovative tactics, employing inflatable tanks, sound effects, and fake radio transmissions to confuse and divert attention away from actual troop movements.
The Ghost Army arrived shortly before D-Day and executed more than 20 deception campaigns. The Ghost Army is an honorary member of the PSYOP Regiment as of 3 November 2022.
